Who is Obo?
Hi yeah it’s me, Tucker. I officially started Obo Cycles in January 2025. I’ve been riding bikes since I was three and started touring with my dad around 10. Moving to Montreal to start university really sent me down the rabbit hole of bike culture; getting into fixies and volunteering as a mechanic at RTM/Lvl and Santrovélo. Eventually while working at La Bicycletterie JR I heard about Jacques Gallant’s frame building class, which I took in 2022. (Strongly recommend taking his course if you’re intrigued; here). I’ve been hooked on frame building and metalwork since then, and eventually hope to do this as a full-time project. I’m currently based in Victoria, BC, on the Lekwungen territory of the Songhees and Esquimalt nations.
I believe riding bikes to be an inherently political activity. Cycling is a tool for reducing poverty (1). It played a role in early women’s rights movements (2) and continues to be used as a tool to combat gender-based violence (3). It fosters knowledge sharing and grassroots organization, and supports locally-owned businesses while advancing an anticapitalist ethos. It creates safer, healthier, more vibrant communities (4) and does so in defiance of decades of car-centric urban planning and policy. I strive for my work to be informed by and contributing to these beliefs.
